Mamallapuram

Mamallapuram is very well connected and  easy to reach. If you choose to go by air then Chennai is the closest airport. Going by rail is also an option. The nearest railway station is Chengalpattu. If you are a person who enjoys the scenic beauty and like to go by road then there are bus services to Mamallapuram from Chennai and Chengalpattu.

They are frequent and convenient It is connected by buses  which  arrive in the centre of the town from Tiruvanmiyur in _ puram" _Kanchipuram_ . The roads are very  well maintained . It runs parallel to the coast of Bay of Bengal and is flanked by the best natural beauty. Although the area around Mamallapuram was devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami: you can still see its beauty.

fascinating temples, silk sarees that are sought after world wide, a history rich and varied with Jain and Buddhist connections, a political movement which changed the history of Tamil Nadu, Idlis (steamed rice cakes) that make you crave for more..... the list is endless.Mamallapuram, placed at 60 kms south of Chennai and housed on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, was once a port of the Pallavas.

The Pallavas have created many marvelous monuments with Sculptural Panels, Caves, Monolithic Rathas and Temples. It is a town in Kancheepuram district with a number of historic monuments built between 7 th and 9 th centuries and classified as UNESCO world heritage sites.

Tours to Mamaallapuram - There are several tourist attractions in Mamallapuram. The Arjuna's Penance is a skillfully carved rock and the largest relief sculpture in the world. It gets its name from the figure of an ascetic who is believed to be Arjuna, the hero of Mahabharata, doing penance to obtain a boon from Lord Siva.

However, there are others who think that the figure is actually Bhagiratha who entreated Siva to let the river Ganges flow over the earth. Five Rathas are five monolithic temples, each created in different style.

Mamallapuram Tourism and they are also known as Pancha Pandava Rathas , and four of the Rathas are supposed to have scooped out of a single rock formation. Tiger's Cave is located 4 kms north of the main monument complex. It is an open air theatre, where cultural programs are held. Though it is very near the sea, the place is serene and calm.

The Shore Temple is one of the oldest temples in South India. It belongs to the 8th Century AD and is a good example of the first phase of structural temples constructed in Dravidian style.Chennai is the closest airport from Mamallapuram. The nearest railway station is Chengalpattu. There are bus services to Mamallapuram from Chennai and Chengalpattu.
