The hill resorts in this city of Wayanad serve excellent delicious dishes to their clients. The common food here is known to be the typical south Indian foods. There are varieties of vegetarian foods and non vegetarian foods served in the city. Like as in many cities of south India, Wayanad is also fond of rice and it is their staple food.
Rasam, Sambhar, Moru kootan and Poricha kootu are some most delicious dishes to take along with rice. The restaurants and hotels of the city also serve their clients with the best liquors of international quality. Varieties of Italian foods and Chinese foods are also served in the hotels of Wayanad.
The region is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve which was notified in the year 1973 as a wildlife sanctuary. It is Rich in bio-diversity .The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary comprises two districts of Kerala i.e. in the north; it is a part of the Cannanore
Kerala Wildlife Sanctuary - The Climate is influenced by the southwest monsoon. The average rainfall in Wayanad is 2322 m.m in the district. The area receives reasonable amount of rain, most of which is received during June to August. March, April and May are warm.
Flora - There are two types of forest one is south Indian moist deciduous type where maruthi, karimaruthi, rosewood, venteak, bamboo etc grows and the other is the semi-evergreen patches where Veteria indica. Lagerstroemia, Lanceolata are found. Tea, coffee and rubber plantations are found here. The soil and climate is suitable for horticulture on commercial basis.
Fauna -The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is home to tigers, leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, jackals, and Indian foxes besides the gaur, sambar, mongooses, jungle cats, squirrels, hares, etc are also found. It is also houses peacocks, babblers, cuckoos, owls, woodpeckers, jungle fowls are a few of the various types of birds seen here.
Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala, Wayanad and its rich natural resources offer several opportunities for adventure tourism. Tourists can go trekking to the Chembra Peak which is the highest peak in Wayanad at 2100m above sea level. Trekking to the peak takes almost a day, it is a very challenging task and tourists can stay on the peak in temporary camps for few days. The view from the hill top down the lake is breath taking.
Pakshipathalam in Bramha Giri hills at Thirunelly is another tourist spot. To reach 'Pakshipathalam', 17 km has to be covered through wild forest. Northern top end of the Brahmagiri is the habitat of various birds and wild animals. To go to 'Pakshipathalam' special permission has to be obtained from forest department.
Meenmutty Water Fall 12 km. east of Meppadi. Water falls to a depth of more than 500m. in 3steps.
Trekking equipments are available at Tourist Information Centre, Kalpetta.
Temples of Kalpetta, Glass temple of Kottamunda and Edakkal Caves are a few other famous spots at Wayanad.
