Smart Holidays

niceSometimes our pre-conceived ideas and prejudices force us away from simple truths that could make our lives so much easier and entertaining. Let me illustrate what I'm trying to say with a simple example. We all know that nowadays immersive language learning experiences are the trendy thing to do if you want to learn a foreign language and have enough money to throw around. Following that logic, it would go without saying that if someone (for instance) was looking for the best English school London would be the ideal place to go. Few people know that if you ask around, you'll find that Bristol houses many of the country's best language institutes and that they are offering language courses for foreigners at bargain prices.

In the same vein, I usually hear people talking about how much they would love to go away for a holiday to a warm and sunny place and have their well deserved rest in beaches of golden sands. Most of the times, these people talk about Miami or Spain (depending on which side of the Atlantic they hope to spend their vacations) like it was a given that the best beaches are to be found there. I'm going to let you in on a little secret: they're not even close. This tip is going to make your next holidays an amazing experience.

Welcome to Andaman and Nicobar

uglyAndaman and Nicobar are a rather large group of islands in the Bay of Bengal. Counting almost 600 the islands are actually closer to Myanmar and Thailand but they belong and are usually grouped with Southern India. The islands received a massive hit on 2004 since they were very close to the epicenter of the "Boxing Day" quake, but luckily (except Little Andaman Island and the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park) every tourist destination is back on their horse.

The islands are simply a quiet paradise, hidden from the eyes of most of the hurried tourists that want that cookie cutter experience that the classic hotel can give them. The beautiful sight of the pale sea mingled with the golden of the sands and the lush green of the forests is worth alone the price of the trip. Adaman proposes a different and more relaxed kind of holiday, a time for internal rest in the midst of natural beauty.

There is much more to do than just sightseeing, however. One of the main attraction for tourists is scuba diving. If you are among this crowd, I recommend Havelock Island which is a great diving destination. For those who already have their bearings, the best spot is in the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park which has recently reopened its doors for this activity. For the hikers out there, Barren Island has India's only active volcano. This can be reached with an overnight boat trip and a 3 hour hike through the island.

The Adaman beaches are a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by the well informed traveller. Here you will enjoy the warm sun and hear a symphony of waves crashing against the shoreline, or perhaps moon bathe while the plankton swim in a phosphorescent sea. Next time you think about going to an English school in London or for a sunny holiday in Florida, remember that the most obvious choice... is not always the best.
